Frostburg State University, or FSU for short, is a four-year university located in Frostburg, which is a city in the US state of Maryland, in Allegany County, with a population of more than 8000 inhabitants.
FSU was established in 1898 and first started as State Normal School 2, its original mission being to train teachers for the state's public school system. After being renamed several times, over the years, the school finally adopted its current name in 1987, when it received university status.
FSU's sports teams call themselves Bobcats and they compete in NCAA Division III, in sports which include baseball, basketball, cross country, football and lacrosse. Their distinctive colors are red, black and white.
Among Frostburg State's noteworthy alumni, there are also: Richard R. Arnold - NASA astronaut, selected in 2004 as an Educator Mission Specialist, Gregory Thomas Garcia - Emmy-winning writer and producer of the television series `Yes, Dear` and `My Name Is Earl`, James Wolcott - journalist and cultural critic for Vanity Fair, and James A. Graham - Captain in the Marine Corps and posthumous recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
